Cracker Creek Museum Of Mining
The Cracker Creek Museum of Mining was formed to preserve, interpret, and restore the mining history which played such a major role in the development (and the decline) of Sumpter.
The Oregon State Parks Dredge Heritage Area, and its centerpiece - the Yuba style dredge - capture everyone's attention, yet much more gold was mined from the underground mines than was ever recovered by the dredge. It is the heritage of these mines, and the miners that operated them that we seek to preserve for our own generation and all those that will follow.
Our museum grounds are located on the East (right) side of the highway as you enter Sumpter. We will soon have a variety of outdoor equipment displays, complete with signage that explains what the equipment is, and how it was used.
Our future projects include:
1. Building of a small storage building to provide security to our smaller artifacts.
2. Building a restoration shop that will initially double as our display building.
3. Building of the Mining History and Technology building that will feature interpretive exhibits of many of the facets of underground (hard rock) mining.
There is a lot to see in Sumpter, and we hope you'll enjoy our mining exhibits on your next trip!
